Republican House candidate Laura Hois (R-Downers Grove) knows she’s made for crisis times like these in Springfield only made worse by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“Our state government has earned a reputation for corruption and lack of transparency,” Hois, running against incumbent state Rep. Anne Stava-Murray (D-Naperville) in the 81st District in November, told the DuPage Policy Journal. “Illinoisans generally don't trust our state government to manage our finances well---for good reason. It's understandable to be concerned about government overreach that might increase taxes and harm economic growth. I'll demand accountability and transparency from state government to ensure it is effectively serving your interests and not overreaching.”
Even as the crisis that has essentially shut down the state’s economy lingers, Hois said she’s not worried about the state’s ability to rebound provided lawmakers stay out of the way of the people of the state.
“During this time of crisis, business owners seek temporary assistance to keep their doors open, not government bailouts,” she said. “Individuals who have lost their jobs seek temporary assistance until such time as they can return to work. Even prior to this crisis, Illinois' economy has experienced only moderate growth, constrained by corruption probes, pension debt, and a lack of political will to do anything about it. The people of Illinois are resilient and will help the economy recover if the government cleans up its act and gets out of their way.”
As for dealing with the crisis directly brought on by the spread of the virus, Hois said she’s glad to see at least some members of local government have tried to rise to the challenge.
“Local governments in our community have communicated well and have been responsive and proactive during this crisis,” she said. “Our neighbors are honoring social distancing guidance outdoors, in grocery stores, and at restaurants with take-out service. The people I see are calm and cooperative. I appreciate all that our first-responders, public officials, and community businesses are doing to help during this time.”
