Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board of Education met Nov. 12.

Here is the agenda provided by the board:

James E Collins, Margaret Harrell, Karen Stuefen, Kara Caforio, Chris Kocinski, Courtenae Trautmann (6:05 p.m.), Elizabeth Hosler

Administrators present

1. Opening of Meeting

A. Call to Order

Mrs. Caforio called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m.

B. Roll Call

Present: Collins, Caforio, Hosler, Stuefen, Harrell, Kocinski

Absent: Trautmann

C. Pledge of Allegiance

2. Public Comments

A. The Board will receive public comments for up to three minutes concerning items on this agenda, as well as communication, petitions, reports from citizens or representatives of other public agencies

No public comments.

3. Opening Activity

Mrs. Mariann Lemke provided the board with prompts and board members and crafted a ‘letter to the D205 community” based on survey results.

4. Thrive D205 Update

Dr. Moyer provided an overview of Thrive D205, its priorities, committees, and goals.

Mrs. Hosler provided an overview of the ThriveD205 committee. Mr. Collins noted interest in working with focus groups of students and working on tackling issues quicker. He noted school start time delay.

Dr. Harrell noted that there are other important topics to cover. Mrs. Trautmann noted support for Thrive D205 and encouraged taking action and implementing changes. The Board discussed the change in start times and its effects.

The Board discussed post-secondary courses, caps, rigor and college counseling.

5. Assessment

Mrs. Tammaru provided an overview of the research behind homework.

The Board discussed how homework affects students and how homework can be adjusted to better suit student needs.

The Board discussed reporting agencies. The Board discussed the balance of traditional accountability measures.

Mrs. Tammaru provided an overview on standards based reporting.

The Board discussed assessments, standards based reporting, common core standards and application.

Mrs. Tammaru discussed supporting teachers.

Mr. Scott Grens discussed improvements to current approaches in grading. The Board discussed test retakes and focusing on standards.

6. Balance of Traditional Accountability Measures, Student Wellness and Life Readiness

Dr. Moyer discussed taking control of the District’s story. Mrs. Bev Redmond showcased a product to communicate District values.

Mr. Scott Grens discussed ‘A Portrait of a Graduate’ process overview.

7. Closing Activity

The Board and Administration worked with the Directors to look at different assessments.
