The holiday season is here – that wonderful time of year we’ve all been waiting for since it ended last year, and the anticipation of this year’s new presents waiting for us under the tree! Ok, well maybe that’s a bit more of a child’s take on the holiday season, but sometimes we adults feel that same excitement at a special gift we hope to receive.
New year, new laws for 2020.
On January 1, more than 200 new laws, or updates to existing laws, will go into effect in Illinois. Among them are laws that provide additional protections for victims of sexual assault, greater access to healthcare, expanded consumer protections, improved public safety and more benefits for veterans.
Here are a few highlights to know:
HB 38 – Enhances criminal penalties for violence committed in a place of worship.
HB 889 – Mandates insurance coverage of tick-borne illnesses.
HB 2135 – Eliminates statute of limitations for prosecution of criminal sexual assault.
SB 162 – Makes mammograms more accessible.

Illinois continues to be ranked one of the most corrupt states in the country and Chicago is the most corrupt city in the nation, but Speaker Madigan continues to do nothing to reform the culture of corruption that continues to plague our state.
Gettin’ “Groovy” for story time at the library.
Last month, I had a great time joining staff and families at the Naper Boulevard Library in Naperville for family story time. I helped tell the story of children’s character Groovy Joe on his Ice Cream & Dinosaurs adventure.

Meeting with Canadian Consul General to discuss USMCA.
On December 12, I had to the opportunity to meet with Consul General of Canada in Chicago John Cruickshank as part of a forum and business tour promoting economic opportunity and trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico. One of the topics we discussed is the $2 billion per day of land based commerce alone that currently exists between the the U.S. and Canada. Cruickshank explained how this figure stands to increase, in a particularly beneficial way for Illinois as one of the largest agriculture exporters to Canada, once the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) is ratified by the three nations.
