First-term Illinois state Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) has been installed on the Illinois Childhood Cancer Board, where she will be entrusted with making recommendations for pediatric cancer research grants supported by the state.

“I look forward to directing funds toward innovative research and finding support for needed clinical studies to help accomplish this life-saving work,” Mazzochi said in a press release. “Any cancer diagnosis is devastating, especially when a child is involved. Illinois has many oncology centers and tremendous organizations researching childhood cancers. It leads the Midwest in making pediatric cancer diagnoses.”

With new therapies being advanced every day, Mazzochi added that she is excited about the reach the board’s work could have across both the state and the entire country.

“We also should encourage fundamental research on oncology models to design new cures, and ensure that Illinois has the most advanced and promising research centers and resources,” she said.

Medical researchers estimate that as many as 12,000 children across the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer this year, hammering home the need for quick and impactful research in the area of childhood study. As someone with both private-sector experience in the area of new pharmaceuticals and pediatric cancer, Mazzochi’s role on the 10-member board is seen as pivotal.

She joins the director of the Illinois Department of Public Health and other medical experts on the panel.

Responsible for reviewing grant applications and making decisions about funding for public and not-for-profit projects, The Childhood Cancer Research Fund receives most of its funding from voluntary charitable contributions donated by state residents who check the applicable box on their state income tax return.

Mazzochi also sits on such House committees as Health & Healthcare Disparities, and Mental Health. Her 47th District includes all or parts of Elmhurst, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Western Springs, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Westmont and Downers Grove.
