Community Consolidated School District 89 recently issued the following announcement.

The Glen Crest Middle School eighth-grade boys basketball team is DuPage Metro Valley Association Conference champions after winning both the regular-season and conference-tournament titles. The Spartans beat Herrick Middle School 49-45 on Wednesday at Glen Crest to earn the tournament title.

Glen Crest team “There was such a great atmosphere for a middle school game,” said Glen Crest head coach Danny Sheridan. “It was an awesome championship game with the two best teams, which is how it should be.”

Glen Crest finished the year 20-1, with their only loss coming earlier this year to Herrick. Last year, as seventh graders, this same Glen Crest team lost all three games against Herrick, which won the regular-season and tournament championships. Many of the boys from both schools also play against each other in travel leagues.

“They know everything about each other. They were very motivated going into that game,” Sheridan said.

Glen Crest was up by four at the half. The Spartans have dealt with injuries throughout the year and many players have been in games for meaningful minutes this season. That depth proved to be important in the championship as the score remained close.

“It was a really close-knit team with no egos,” Sheridan said. “Everyone enjoyed each others’ success.

The Glen Crest team was: Jalen Brown, Owen DiFranco, Jack Donnelly, Owen Gibson, Michael Glover, Jahki Gray, Alex LaMontagna, Tres Moore, Brian Uvodich, Frankie Valli, Jake Vozza, Grant Wallner, Avery Webster, Nathan Zambori, and Brock Zellinger.
