City of Elmhurst issued the following announcement on Oct. 18.
The City of Elmhurst reminds residents that safety is an important part of Halloween fun. Official trick-or-treating hours in Elmhurst are 3:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31. The following tips will keep residents safe while preparing for Halloween and before/after trick-or-treating.
When preparing for Halloween, make sure children are wearing costumes that don’t limit their mobility or senses; make sure they can see adequately out of masks. Additionally, providing kids with flashlights or glow sticks as part of their costumes will ensure they can be seen as they trick-or-treat.
While trick-or-treating, follow these rules to stay safe. Children should stay in well-lit areas. Young children should always be accompanied by an adult and parents should inspect treats at home to ensure candy is sealed and has not been tampered.
Fire safety is also an important part of Halloween. Decorations are the first things to ignite in the reported house fires each year. As a general rule, keep children and decorations away from open flames. To avoid house fires, use battery operated candles or glow sticks inside jack-o-lanterns. Review fire safety with kids such as reminding them to stay away from open flames and review “Stop, Drop and Roll” procedures. Always keep exits clear of decorations so that escape routes are accessible.
After Halloween, please remember to dispose of your pumpkins sustainably. Recycle your pumpkins on Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 9 a.m. to noon at the City of Elmhurst Public Works Facility (985 S. Riverside Drive, Elmhurst). Pumpkins collected at this event will be composted.
