COMMUNITY CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL DISTRICT 89: CCSD 89 families invited to fun, free “STEAM” Night on October 22

Marana

Community Consolidated School District 89 recently issued the following announcement.

Students and families in Community Consolidated School District 89 are invited to imagine, design, and construct at the STEAM Family Night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 22 at Glen Crest Middle School. “STEAM” stands for: science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

STEAM logo The STEAM Family Night is a free event with fun activities that are appropriate for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Families will be able to help students complete the hands-on challenges that require imagination, critical thinking, and problem solving.

There will be a number of stations for students to visit, and many of them involve movement and critical thinking. At one station, students will build a mechanical hand with finger movement. At another, they will use computer coding to design a geometric art project.

Kids will have the opportunity to build a balloon car or a clothespin airplane. At another station, students will light up the eyes of an owl or jack-o-lantern by completing an electrical circuit.

There’s also problem-solving puzzles, including rescuing Fred the worm after his boat capsizes. Students can examine the chemical properties of glitter slime, create a balancing robot, or make a spider web.

If your student has not already registered at school, please fill out the form found here or register online at: https://goo.gl/forms/mLI3mLV9KmMeLqsm2

Last year was the inaugural STEM Imagination Night, which was created by CCSD 89 teachers Catherine Hornig and Tonia Hardtke from a PEP Foundation grant. Hornig and Hardtke were looking for ways to expand learning beyond the classroom, and involve parents in their student’s STEM learning. This year’s event has expanded to include an artistic element of the STEM education.

“This is a time when we can bring all families together,” said Glen Crest Middle School science teacher Paul Wilson, who is a part of the organizing committee. “Students will be able to use the available resources to have fun with science through positive, creative interaction.”

English Language teachers have provided support for this event.
