Naperville Police Department issued the following announcement on July 25.

Department encourages “A Safer Naper” in August by focusing on back-to-school safety

To ensure Naperville’s families are prepared for a safe and productive new school year, the Naperville Police Department is offering a safety presentation for college-bound students, a self-defense class for high school and college-aged women and various additional educational resources centered around back-to-school safety. The efforts are part of the Department’s “A Safer Naper” campaign, which aims to educate residents on how to prevent crime and enhance their safety by regularly providing new tips, tactics and resources based on monthly themes.

On Wednesday, August 1, the Department encourages all college freshmen and their parents to attend a presentation entitled “Safety for the College Bound Student.” This program will educate students and parents about drugs, alcohol and the law in addition to presenting important personal safety information to students. No registration is required for this class, which will be held at 7 p.m. at the Naperville Police Department, 1350 Aurora Ave.

On the following night – Thursday, August 2 – the Naperville Police Department will host a free self-defense workshop for high school and college-aged women from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Safety Town, 1320 Aurora Ave. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Priority registration will be given to those that attend the previous night’s seminar.

For more information on the college-bound safety presentation or to register for the self-defense class, visit www.naperville.il.us/asafernaper. Additional questions may be directed to Crime Prevention Specialist Mary Browning at (630) 420-6731.

Throughout the month, the Department’s “A Safer Naper” campaign will continue to promote back-to-school safety community-wide by encouraging safe driving, promoting safe school walk routes and sharing safety tips on the Naperville Police Department’s website (www.naperville.il.us/ASaferNaper) and social media accounts (www.facebook.com/napervillepolicedepartment and www.twitter.com/napervillepd).
