City of Naperville issued the following announcement on June 14.
National Night Out takes place Tuesday, August 7; Event registration due July 16
Neighborhoods throughout Naperville are invited to join communities nationwide and participate in National Night Out from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2018. Online registration is now available by visiting www.naperville.il.us/nno.
Commonly called “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” National Night Out is a nationwide event designed to heighten drug prevention and crime awareness, generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships. In 2017, nearly 50 Naperville neighborhoods participated by hosting block parties, potlucks, parades, ice cream socials and more!
Neighborhoods are asked to register their 2018 National Night Out events with the City of Naperville by July 16. Registration is free and will allow members of the Naperville Police, Fire, Public Works, Animal Control, Electric and Water Utility departments, and Park District Police to visit many of the registered events! Visit www.naperville.il.us/nno to access an online registration form or to find additional information about National Night Out activities, which includes a free community kick-off event at Centennial Beach on Monday, August 6.
On the night of the neighborhood events, residents throughout Naperville and across the nation are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, firefighters and other city personnel. Events such as cookouts, block parties and neighborhood walks will all occur simultaneously throughout Naperville and nationwide.
“National Night Out is one of my favorite nights of the year, since it really highlights both the partnership our community has with the police department and our commitment as a community to crime prevention and awareness,” said Mayor Steve Chirico. “I always say that Naperville is a large city with a small-town feel, and the participation we see from residents and neighborhoods on National Night Out is proof of that.”
Donation Drive
The City of Naperville has partnered with Naperville Area Humane Society and A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter for this year’s National Night Out donation drive. Neighborhoods are encouraged to conduct a donation drive for these worthy causes in conjunction with their National Night Out events. A donation box will be provided. A printable flyer containing more information about our partner organizations and a list of requested items is available at www.naperville.il.us/nno.
Paws on Patrol
Each year, the City of Naperville selects an issue impacting our community to be highlighted on National Night Out with continued focus throughout the year. This year we are introducing the Dog Walker Watch program “Paws on Patrol.” Paws on Patrol encourages residents out in their neighborhoods to act as extra eyes and ears while out walking their dogs. The program enhances the partnership between police and community while providing resources for neighbors to be more aware and how to effectively observe and report suspicious activity.
