DuPage County issued the following announcement on June 5.
During their monthly meeting on Tuesday, the DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee held an awards ceremony to honor the top groups from this year’s 12th annual Sustainable Design Challenge. The top awards went to students from York Community High School (Elmhurst) and Glenbard East High School (Lombard).
“Members of the DuPage County Board and I were very impressed by the hard work put forth by all of the students at this year’s Sustainable Design Challenge,” said DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee Chairman Jim Zay. “The groups we recognized today, especially, went above and beyond with their designs.”
Sponsored by DuPage County Stormwater Management, SCARCE coordinates the annual event, which encourages students to construct building and landscape models using environmental and water-friendly design practices. Local professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields served as judges during the event, evaluating the students’ designs, presentations and innovation.
The winning groups were:
•Cate Ayers and Siva Sreedhar, York Community High School, for Overall LEED Design;
•Annalise Soldano, Franchesca Soldano, Mollie Grasse and Bridget Tully, York Community High School, for Best Stormwater Design; and
•Emily Greetis and Lina Gebhardt, Glenbard East High School, for Best Energy Efficiency Design.
“All participants involved this year had fantastic building designs. It is very inspiring to have such bright young minds in DuPage County,” added Zay.
The 12th annual Sustainable Design Challenge took place on April 17, where nearly 30 student groups presented models of their designs and explained the design elements that made their building sustainable. These elements included renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines, and water conservation elements such as native plant landscaping, rain barrels and other green infrastructure for stormwater management.
