DuPage County issued the following announcement on May 31.
Residents of the Highland Hills subdivision in unincorporated Lombard will have Lake Michigan water running through their homes beginning June 5. From that point on, DuPage County will provide water service to the subdivision’s homes and businesses.
The change comes after the Highland Hills Sanitary District asked the County to extend Lake Michigan water service to their customers last summer.
After the County establishes itself as the subdivision’s water supplier, the Highland Hills Sanitary District will be dissolved next year and Flagg Creek Water Reclamation District will provide sewer collection and treatment services to residents.
The process begins at 12:01 a.m. June 5, when Lake Michigan water will begin flowing through the Highland Hills system.
For the next several hours, DuPage County Public Works staff will be flushing fire hydrants.
Residents of the subdivision are asked to establish a regular water flushing program to rid their plumbing of any sediment, rust or metals, including any lead to maintain good water quality.
During the first weeks of June, subdivision residents may notice a change in the color of their water while pipes are cleaned out.
DuPage Public Works Chairman Jim Healy advised, “The previous water supply contained minerals that would tend to leave a scale coating on your water pipes.
Because the lake water is much softer than the previous water, it will absorb and break down the old mineral deposits during extended idle periods.
It is important to flush the debris out by removing and cleaning aerators and running your cold water until the temperature is cold and constant, bringing in fresh water from the main line in the street.”
