Roskam says House plan will fix 'broken tax code'

Tax

Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) recently defended the proposed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, arguing in an article Crain’s Chicago Business that the legislation will increase deductions for most families in his district and reduce taxes for all tax brackets.

“For too many years, Americans have endured a broken tax code that punishes hardworking taxpayers,” Roskam wrote. “We don't have to live like this. We can transform our tax code into something that works for more Americans, something that respects and rewards hard work, and something that Americans deserve.”

Roskam wrote that the House tax plan will increase the standard deduction for families to $24,000, doubling the current rate. The legislation will also see significant tax bill reductions for his average constituent, and that all taxpayers will see tax relief for all tax brackets, the article said.

“The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is good legislation. It respects and rewards hard work by allowing taxpayers to keep more of the money they earn in their paychecks,” Roskam wrote. “We are fighting for hardworking taxpayers and a healthy economy so that we can grow our economy and allow America to compete and win. Under this tax plan, everyone benefits and everyone has the same opportunities.”
