Wheaton FD responds to 117 fires in 2016

Wheaton Fire Department responded to 919 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the DuPage Policy Journal.

The calls in Wheaton included 117 fires - 80 structure fires, eight vehicle fires and 26 other fires. The fire department also responded to three calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $446,850 in fire loss - or about $3,819 per fire.

The department also received 802 false calls, including one malicious call and 801 other false calls.

One fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents.

The Wheaton Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 38 active employees and 19 retired or inactive employees, was $1,673,065 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $14,300 for every fire in 2016.
