City of Aurora Veterans Advisory Council met March 16.

1. Call to Order
The Aurora Veterans Advisory Council, Meeting #51 was called to order at 5:30 pm by Chair Toma.
2. Pledge of Allegiance
The Pledge of Allegiance was proudly proclaimed by the entire membership present. Post the Pledge of Allegiance, a brief “Moment of Silence” was observed for our fallen.
3. Roll Call
Roll call was taken by Secretary Roscoe. The results of the roll call are indicated above.
4. Mission Statement
Ms. Perkins recited the AVAC mission statement.
5. Approval of February2017 Meeting Minutes
Mr. Reyna moved that the minutes of the February 2017 meeting of the council be approved. Mr. McKnight seconded the motion. The motion carried by voice vote.
6. Treasurer’s Report
Vice Chair/Treasurer Garcia presented the treasurer’s report.
7. Open Member Status Report
No report.
8. Hope for Tomorrow
Picnic date has been confirmed for Sunday, August 13, 2017.
9. Subcommittees
(a) Monument Update
Mr. McKnight reported that the engraver will need at least 1-2 weeks notice.
(b) Scholarship Fund Scholarship Fund
Mr. Roscoe reported that he and Chairman Toma had met with Heather Johnson at the Community Foundation to discuss offering our scholarship to Veterans as well as high school seniors. Heather Johnson has provided guidelines to add to our application. The scholarship subcommittee will meet immediately following today’s AVAC meeting to review the language to be added to our scholarship application.

(a) Service Dog Project

(c) Vets Week 2017
Ms. Garcia and Mr. Toma went through the calendar of events with an emphasis on manpower needed from the council to help make this year’s event a success.
Mr. Toma will contact the Kane County VA to see if their bus is available for the Car
Show.
Mr. Pfeuffer to look into hosting a Blood Drive on the day of the Car Show.
Mr. Butler to talk to the restaurants at West Plaza about donating to AVAC if customers come into the restaurant as part of the Car Show.
Mr. McKnight will coordinate installing flags at various locations during Vets Week. (JULIE)
Mr. McKnight will check on availability of flags from West Aurora High School.
Mr. Hess will check on availability of flags from East Aurora High School.
Mr. Hess will look into getting a van to pick up donations from Jewel Food Store.
Mr. Hess will see about bringing his “Company” to run in the 5k.
Mr. Reyna will contact Hartford Insurance about brining their vehicle to the Car Show
and sponsorship again.
Mr. Nelson will check with Nadler about donating golf carts to be used at the Veteran’s Picnic.
11. Good of the Order
Mr. Toma reported that Mr. McKnight had donated a wheelchair to a Veteran with ALS.
Mr. Delatorre submitted his resignation from AVAC as he has a number of out of town commitments and doesn’t feel that he would be able to fulfill his obligations to AVAC. AVAC members wished Mr. D well and thanked him for his service on the council.
12. Next Scheduled Meeting Date
The next meeting of the AVAC was announced for April 20, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at AMVETS Post 103, 1194 Jericho Road, Aurora.
