Service Academy Day in St. Charles to offer information on military academies

Meeting

U.S. Reps. Randy Hultgren (R-IL) and Peter Roskam (R-IL) are hosting a Service Academy Day from 9 a.m. to noon April 22 at St. Charles East High School for students and their families from from the 14th and 6th Congressional districts interested in U.S. service academies.

Hultgren said in a release that the event will offer key information for students considering a military career.

Representatives from the nation’s five major service academies – West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy – will make presentations and participate in question and answer sessions.

“It is a distinct honor when our students are selected to our nation’s top service academies,” Hultgren said in the release. “If a student desires to pursue this distinguished education and vocation, it is important they start the process early in their middle and high school careers. Service Academy Day provides interested families with essential information as they consider serving our country through military service.”

Service day material will also cover congressional nominations; families can acquaint themselves with this aspect ahead of time by visiting: http://hultgren.house.gov/serving-you/service-academy-nominations/service-academy-nominations-faq.

High school graduates who enroll in a U.S. service academy commit to a total of nine years of service upon enrollment; prospective applicants are assessed on character, academic record, leadership and physical aptitude.

Roskam called the opportunity “a prestigious commitment of service and sacrifice to our country” and offered his office’s support throughout the nomination process, the release said.

St. Charles East High School is located at 1020 Dunham Road in St. Charles. Service Academy Day will be held in the school’s little theater.
