Amid reports of missing property and last-minute changes in move-in plans, the transition between outgoing Illinois Comptroller Leslie Geissler Munger and incoming Comptroller Susana Mendoza recently took on a testy tone.
Mendoza told Chicago TV station NBC-5 that previous staffers had hidden computers, desk keys, TVs and state vehicle keys. However, later reports suggest the allegedly missing items issues have been resolved.
No furniture, files or equipment have been documented as missing and Mendoza said she had no proof of any foul play.
A spokesperson for Mendoza assessed that most of what was thought missing was not. However, Mendoza may have assumed the worst before finding this out because she told WLS-AM in an interview that “it did kind of feel the place was looted,” but also said she could not commit to a "definitive statement" that there was any “pilfering" going on.
Mendoza also changed her plans for moving staff and materials into the space, moving her swearing-in ceremony up a month to Dec. 5 to accommodate travel plans. Capitol Fax’s Rich Miller said that if Mendoza had not decided to be sworn in early, “some of this mess could’ve been avoided.”
Mendoza’s questions about the condition of her office may only distract from her mission as she begins her tenure, the Chicago Sun-Times said.
The newspaper said a proper inventory appeared to have commenced with everything in good order.
“Oh, please,” the newspaper said. “Just do the job."
