Michelle Smith, a Republican Senate candidate in District 49, has reasserted her commitment to serving as an independent representative with a recent Facebook post.
“I am committed to serving as your independent representative in Springfield," the post to her Facebook page reads. "We can't continue to elect legislators who refuse to buck their party leaders and expect our legislature to produce the bipartisan solutions that can create jobs and fix our broken government. We need to work together to fix Illinois' problems!”
Earlier this summer, Smith criticized House Speaker Mike Madigan when his proposed budget plan was passed by the Illinois House, saying she was ashamed. (The State Senate later quashed that budget proposal.)
“I’m ashamed of what our state has become," Smith said. "Ruled by a few with no thoughts on what they do to the people of Illinois, it is absolutely irresponsible and unforgivable that they voted to pass Madigan’s budget."
The plan was under budget by more than $7 billion and would have raised taxes by at least $1,000 for the average family.
“How can our legislators follow a leader without considering the impact when they do so?” Smith said. “(It's) complete disrespect for our Constitution and the taxpayers of Illinois.”
