Glen Ellyn Park District opens soccer registration

Soccer

The Glen Ellyn Park District is accepting registration for its Fall House Soccer program.

A joint program from the Park District and the Glen Ellyn Youth Soccer Organization, its aim is to teach children how to play soccer while also focusing on sportsmanship, physical fitness and having fun. The program has various levels, open to children at nine age levels. It runs from Aug. 27 through Oct. 22.

Age groups are divided by grade and include pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third and fourth grade, fifth and sixth grade, seventh and eighth grade, and ninth and tenth grade. Most teams are co-recreation, and according to the park district's website are generally made up of mostly boys with one to two girls on the team. Girls-only teams are available for grades three and four, and grades five and six.

Pre-kindergarten to first grade teams play on a field of four players per team. Second grade teams play with five players aside; third and fourth grade with seven; fifth and sixth grade with nine; and the older grades with a full 11 on each team.

All coaching will be handled by parent volunteers. Practices will start the week of Aug. 22, with games beginning Aug. 27. Games will be played at Ackerman Park on Saturdays between the hours of approximately 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Practices will be held once a week for one hour according to the volunteer coach’s schedule. Practice location is also dependent on coach’s choice, but all practices will be held within the 8-mile Glen Ellyn radius. Pre-kindergarten teams will not have practices during the week, but will practice before games on Saturdays.

For equipment, players must bring their own ball to practice, wear shin guards under socks and all eyewear must be protective. They will be provided a T-shirt (kindergarten through second grade) and jersey/shorts (third-10th grade) for their uniforms.

Regular registration is open until July 24, with late registration open until Aug. 5. Pre-kindergarten costs $45 to play; kindergarten through second grade costs $65; and the rest all cost $70. Late registration will cost an extra $25 (except pre-kindergarten, which is only an extra $15). Nonresidents will pay an additional $30.
