With scam phone calls on the rise in Lombard the past few weeks, the Lombard Police Department has issued a warning to all residents, reminding them not to give out any personal information or authorize a wire transfer to anyone over the phone.
The Illinois Attorney General’s office said con artists pretending to be IRS agents are calling Lombard residents, telling them they owe large amounts of money in taxes, and demanding immediate payment. The callers often offer unconventional methods of payment for their victims, such as instructing them to upload money to a prepaid debit card, or to make a wire transfer.
The IRS has made it clear that its agents will never call anyone to demand immediate payment. Any amount of money the government claims a resident owes is always subject to an appeal. The agency also will never require a specific form of payment or threaten to have someone arrested for not making a payment.
The Lombard Police Department reminds residents that if they receive one of these calls, they should hang up and immediately contact both 911 and the IRS. For more information, please call the Lombard Police Department at 630-620-4485.
