Nate Mathews, an accomplished local artist and current assistant professor of photography at Northeastern Illinois University, has been selected to juror the art submissions for West Chicago’s 2016 Community Banner Art Project, the West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission said late last week.
Mathews received his fine-arts master's in photography from Columbia College in 2008. His work is well known for its exploration into the ways people respond to architecture. His work recently has been on display at the Rockford Art Museum, Four by Five at the New Orleans Photo Alliance and in a four-person exhibition at the Perspective Gallery in Evanston.
The theme of this year’s banner project is “Patterns – Patterns – Patterns.” Aspiring artists in the Chicagoland area are encouraged to submit art for the project. The commission has received only 12 submissions so far and would like to see additional entries prior to the quickly approaching Feb. 15 deadline. Once works of art, in any medium, are chosen for inclusion, high-resolution images of the art piece will be displayed on 30-by-60-inch banners on the lamp posts along West Chicago’s Main Street between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
