Public works association honors Warrenville bridge project

Warrenville2

Warrenville’s recently completed Williams Road Bridge  rebuilding project was recognized this week by the American Public Works Association (APWA) as the Public Works Project of the Year (Fox Valley Branch,  transportation projects less than $5 million category).

The award was presented at APWA's annual awards luncheon on Tuesday. Warrenville Public Works Superintendent Mike Smith accepted the award on behalf of the city and delivered a brief presentation about the success and results of the project. Several city officials attended, as did representatives from Engineering Enterprises Inc., the project’s consulting engineer, and lead contractor Copenhaver Construction.

The job was recognized most notably for its efficient timeline. It was completed in one construction season, which saved money on retainers and storage and had a minimal impact on residents and businesses in the area.

The project, which was funded by more than $2 million in federal grants, also was recognized for meeting all of its pre-stated goals: raise the roadway above the 100-year floodplain, improve pedestrian safety, install new lighting for aesthetics and security, and improve and extend sanitary flow of sewer and water services.
