With more organizations forced to curtail services to senior citizens because of the Illinois state budget impasse, State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Dist. 23) recently spent time delivering meals to elderly residents in Glendale Heights as part of a program sponsored by the DuPage Senior Citizens’ Council -- a program, like many, hit by budget cuts.

“Essential programs like Meals on Wheels allow our seniors to live independent lives,” Cullerton said. “We need to continue to work together to ensure crucial programs have the necessary resources to serve our community.”

Beginning in January, eight community dining sites are scheduled to discontinue services, including some Meals on Wheels deliveries. These programs currently feed over 1,000 seniors in DuPage County daily, but because of a lack of funding, the services are being cut.

“Our community organizations are looking to Springfield for an agreement,” Cullerton said. “My hope is the governor will work with us to deliver a responsible solution.”

The Meals on Wheels program accepts donations. Please visit DupageSeniorCouncil.org or call 630-620-0804 for more information.
