State Rep. Patti Bellock (R-Dist. 47) and other local officials and constituents from her district gathered on Wednesday for a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the opening of the new Oak Street Bridge in Hinsdale.
Regional Transportation Chairman Kirk Dillard, a former state senator, also attended the even. Dillard worked closely with Bellock to secure funding for the massive replacement project.
The replacement project, which entered the planning stages over five years ago, was deemed necessary as it became apparent that the 100-year-old bridge, which carries the Burlington Northern Santa Fe line, was outdated and could not handle modern freight loads and vehicle traffic. The new Oak Street Bridge took cost over $9 million in capital funds to complete.
