U.S. Sens. Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) said late last week that the Senate unanimously confirmed Edward Gilmore to serve as the U.S. marshal for the Northern District of Illinois.
“The U.S. marshals play a critical role in the effort to protect our communities from criminal fugitives and gun violence,” Kirk said. “With his extensive Illinois and federal law-enforcement experience, Edward Gilmore will be a strong leader in the fight against gangs as the new U.S. marshal for the Northern District of Illinois.”
Gilmore has extensive experience in local, state and federal government and criminal justice. Serving as the police chief of Calumet City for the last seven years, Gilmore also has logged over 20 years at the Drug Enforcement Administration and an additional 10 years as an officer in the Chicago Police Department, including time on the FBI Joint Terrorist Task Force. Gilmore is a past president of the South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police and currently serves on the board of directors of the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force. Gilmore received a bachelor of science degree from Bradley University in 1977.
“Through many years of service to Illinois, Edward Gilmore has established a reputation for responsibility and professionalism in the law enforcement community,” Durbin said. “He will bring a wealth of knowledge and managerial experience to the position of U.S. marshal in the Northern District. It was an honor recommending his name to President Obama.”
Individuals considered for the position undergo a lengthy screening, recommendation and nomination process. Gilmore was one of three candidates recommended by Kirk and Durbin last year.
