DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee, the Village of Carol Stream and the Carol Stream Park District participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday to celebrate the completion of a $12.5 million flood control project in Carol Stream.
“The Klein Creek Flood Mitigation Project is a premier example of government cooperation and collaboration,” DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin said. "This type of partnership is essential as we address significant flooding and water quality issues throughout the county.”
To combat flooding, DuPage County constructed a two reservoir system that operates when water elevations in the adjacent Klein Creek rise: Reservoir one takes in water directly from Klein Creek, and once it has reached full capacity, water is pumped into reservoir two. The system helps to divert floodwaters from the majority of the nearby Armstrong Park neighborhood.
“This dual reservoir system can hold up to 37 million gallons of floodwater, which reduces flooding for 60 properties in the surrounding neighborhood,” DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee Chairman Jim Zay said. "Additionally, the county designed the project to provide multiple benefits for local communities, including more than a mile of new walking and bike paths. In fact, Jay Stream Middle School already took advantage of these new paths during a recent walk-a-thon hosted by the school."
