Sen. Kirk calls attention to International Overdose Day.
U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) issued a statement Monday in regard to International Overdose Day, a day which is recognized around the world to raise awareness of drug overdose and addiction.
Members of Kirk's Heroin Task Force yesterday gathered at the National Safety Council's Overdose Awareness Day Rally in Chicago to speak on the urgency of getting nasal naloxone approved and in the hands of all Illinois first responders.
Kirk called attention to the impact drug addiction and overdose has on individual communities and families.
“Too many Illinois families have seen their child’s life cut short from heroin addiction and overdose," Kirk said. "My heroin task force is working to expand access to the naloxone nasal spray which can save lives if our first responders have it on hand.”
In 2014, Kirk and local county leaders in Illinois launched a Suburban Anti-Heroin Task Force to tackle the ongoing problem of heroin addiction and abuse in the Chicago suburbs. On average, someone dies every three days from a heroin overdose.
