The Downers Grove Police Department recently was recognized in the 2014 Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge as the top municipal agency with 66 to 100 sworn officers.
The challenge recognizes municipal agencies' overall approach to traffic safety. The Downers Grove Police Department stresses that safety is a top priority. Police personnel work throughout the year to educate citizens on the importance of safety, whether in a vehicle, on a bicycle or walking.
Seat belt use has increased in Downers Grove, with a 97.6 percent compliance rate that exceeds the state average of 94.1 percent, and in 2014, the town reported no traffic-related deaths. The number of traffic accidents with injuries and the number of crashes in high-traffic locations were also reduced from 2013.
Chief Robert Porter will accept the award in August.
