State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-IL) is pushing to make Illinois join 14 other states in making college more affordable for students.
Cullerton recently sponsored legislation that would require public universities and community colleges to award students that score a "3" or higher on Advanced Placement (AP) exams college credit.
“We need to continue to explore ways to make college more affordable and help students graduate without mountains of debt,” Cullerton said.
AP classes allow high school students to graduate one semester early from college.
Cullerton's legislation would also clear up any inconsistent policies at public universities and community colleges, as well well as make Illinois competitive with neighboring states that already accept a score of "3" or higher on the exam.
“It’s our duty as a state to make college more affordable and attainable for students," Cullerton said. "This legislation will guarantee we are consistent in Illinois and make us competitive with neighboring states who are trying to lure away our best and brightest to their institutions."
House Bill 3428 is expected to be heard in the Senate’s Committee on Higher Education this week.
