Overnight ramp closures and detours are scheduled this week at the O’Hare Interchange on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) and Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90), according to a June 15 announcement. The closures are needed for ongoing work to relocate the toll plaza in advance of a future Illinois Department of Transportation I-190 project.

The Illinois Tollway reported that two nights of closures and detours will be required for a traffic shift at the plaza as part of ongoing construction. Electronic message signs and construction signage will alert drivers to ramp closures, while up-to-date information will be posted on the Tollway website in the Daily Construction Alert. All work is weather dependent.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, ramps connecting southbound I-294 and eastbound I-90 to westbound I-190 are set to close, with reopening scheduled by 4 a.m. Wednesday, June 17. Similar overnight closures are planned for Wednesday night into Thursday, June 18. If work cannot be completed during these times, additional closures may occur later in the week.

Detour routes will direct southbound I-294 traffic to westbound Irving Park Road and northbound Mannheim Road to access westbound I-190; eastbound I-90 traffic will be routed onto southbound I-294 before following the same detour route. Construction is being carried out in stages with reduced lanes through the plaza area as work continues throughout 2026.

The project includes relocating the Tollway’s I-294 O’Hare Interchange Toll Plaza along with new control building construction, ramp reconstruction, lighting improvements, and updated roadway signage. This is part of broader efforts by the Illinois Department of Transportation aimed at improving operations on I-190 and enhancing access to O’Hare International Airport.

Construction zone speed limits remain in effect around-the-clock in all affected areas. The Illinois Tollway reminded motorists that state law requires changing lanes or slowing down when passing vehicles with hazard lights activated; penalties for violations can include fines up to $25,000 or jail time if workers are injured.
