Ramp closures and detours scheduled at O’Hare Interchange for toll plaza relocation
The Illinois Tollway announced on May 11 that overnight ramp closures and detours are planned this week at the O’Hare Interchange, where the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) and Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) connect to I-190. The closures are needed for ongoing work to relocate the toll plaza in preparation for a future project by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The upcoming construction will affect drivers traveling from southbound I-294 and eastbound I-90 to westbound I-190. According to the release, electronic message signs and construction signage will alert motorists about these changes, with up-to-date information available on the Tollway website in the Daily Construction Alert. All work is weather dependent.
Closures will begin at 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, with ramps expected to reopen by 4 a.m. Wednesday, May 13. If work cannot be completed during this window, additional closures may occur later in the week. Detours will direct southbound I-294 traffic to westbound Irving Park Road and northbound Mannheim Road before accessing westbound I-190; eastbound I-90 traffic will follow a similar route via southbound I-294.
The new toll plaza and roadway pavement are being constructed in stages throughout 2026. Currently, only one lane is open through the plaza area with reduced shoulders as construction continues.
This effort is part of a larger Illinois Department of Transportation project aimed at improving operations on I-190 and enhancing access to O’Hare International Airport. Work includes relocating the existing toll plaza control building, reconstructing ramps, updating lighting systems, and installing new roadway signage.
The Illinois Tollway reminds motorists that speed limits are enforced around-the-clock in all construction zones and urges caution due to changing traffic patterns. Drivers must also comply with Illinois' “Move Over Law,” which requires slowing down or changing lanes when passing vehicles stopped on roadways with hazard lights activated. Violations can result in significant fines or jail time.
