North Central remembers former football coach Jeff Thorne after passing
Former North Central College football coach Jeff Thorne died Tuesday night after a battle with stomach cancer. Thorne was part of the Cardinal coaching staff from 2002 to 2021, serving in several roles including offensive coordinator, assistant head coach, and eventually as head coach.
Thorne began his career at North Central as offensive coordinator in 2002 and became assistant head coach in 2010. He took over as the program’s 25th head coach on January 1, 2015, succeeding his father John Thorne.
Under Jeff Thorne's leadership, the Cardinals achieved significant success. The team won its first NCAA Division III Football National Championship on December 20, 2019. In six seasons as head coach, Thorne led North Central to a record of 65-10 overall and a 46-4 mark in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play. The Cardinals made six consecutive NCAA Division III postseason appearances during his tenure and finished as national championship runner-up in his final season in 2021.
North Central also claimed four CCIW titles with Thorne as head coach and eight more while he served as an assistant. During this period, players earned numerous honors: 41 All-America awards during his time as head coach, a total of 72 All-America honors from 2002–21, along with over one hundred All-Region awards and more than one hundred first-team All-CCIW selections.
Beyond achievements on the field, Thorne continued the tradition started by his father known as "Cardinal Manual Meetings," focusing on character development for student-athletes. Jim Miller ’86, senior director of athletics at North Central said: "Jeff played a fundamentally important role in the Cardinal Manual meetings. These meetings were not just about football, but about how you carry yourself as a student-athlete, a teammate, a brother, and a future husband. Jeff spoke about life, not just the X's and O's. It was about becoming better people. That reflects the culture John started, which Jeff inherited and built upon, and which we benefit from today."
Current head football coach Brad Spencer stated: "Jeff was my mentor and friend. He was a leader on the field, a builder of character, and a source of inspiration for everyone who wore the Cardinal uniform and the coaches who worked by his side. His passion for the game and his commitment to developing All-American teammates, husbands, and fathers will endure as part of his remarkable legacy at North Central."
Abiodun Goke-Pariola, President of North Central College said: "Jeff will forever be known as the head football coach who led our Cardinal football program to their first national title... Whether working alongside his father or leading as head coach, Jeff always won the right way – by putting the student-athlete first... Jeff will be missed but his Hall of Fame legacy will live on here at North Central College for generations to come."
Earlier this fall during Homecoming Weekend at North Central College Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony—where he joined other notable figures including his father—Thorne was honored for his contributions to athletics at North Central.
This season also saw him recognized through the “Refuse to Lose: Cardinals for a Cure” football game supporting him during his illness.
Spencer added: "He lived his life as a faithful servant and devoted man of Christ. I am comforted knowing that he is now resting in the presence of our Savior... And the Cardinals will carry Jeff's relentless 'Refuse to Lose' spirit into every snap, every game, and every season."
