Judge orders pre-trial detention for Chicago man accused of kidnapping in Addison
A DuPage County judge granted the State’s motion on June 8 to detain Tomie Nickles, III, a Chicago man accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s Addison apartment and forcibly kidnapping her last March. Nickles, 33, appeared in First Appearance Court charged with home invasion causing injury, residential burglary, two counts of kidnapping, six counts of domestic battery, and two counts of unlawful restraint.
According to authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 4:20 a.m. on March 8 when the victim was awakened by a crash in her apartment. Prosecutors allege that Nickles entered using an alias and dragged the woman from her apartment through the courtyard to a waiting vehicle. While driving with the victim inside, he allegedly held her by the neck and face before eventually returning her home and fleeing. The victim contacted Addison Police immediately after returning to her residence.
DuPage County Circuit Court Judge Robert Rohm issued an arrest warrant for Nickles later that day. He was arrested by the U.S. Marshal’s Task Force on June 3 and appeared in court on June 6.
“I can’t begin to imagine the terror this innocent woman must have felt when she was allegedly suddenly awoken in the middle of the night, violently kidnapped from her home and physically assaulted during the ensuing car ride,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said, . “While the psychological damage allegedly caused by Mr. Nickles can certainly be debilitating, we are all extremely thankful that the physical injuries she sustained, allegedly at the hands of Mr. Nickles, were not life-threatening. I wish her strength as she continues on her road to recovery. Make no mistake, this type of violent behavior will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force of the law.” Berlin also commended law enforcement agencies involved in identifying and apprehending Nickles.
Addison Chief of Police Roy Selvik said, “Thanks to the efforts of our Investigative Division and U.S. Marshal's Service, this violent offender was identified, located and detained.” Selvik continued: “This brutal act committed against an innocent victim simply sleeping in their home is extremely unnerving.”
Nickles’ next court appearance is scheduled for June 9 before Judge Daniel Guerin.
