Illinois lawmakers have filed more than 40 bills aimed at fixing the SAFE-T Act, but most of these proposals remain inactive, according to a May 1 announcement. The statement said it is time to address what was described as a failed policy and offered solutions for improvement.

The issue matters because the SAFE-T Act has been the subject of debate among state legislators and members of the public. Lawmakers say that meaningful changes are needed to improve public safety and restore confidence in the law.

"We have filed more than 40 bills to fix the SAFE-T Act, yet most have been left to sit dormant. It’s past time to get serious about fixing this failed policy, and these are the solutions to do it," Illinois State Representative Amy Grant said in a statement. More information about proposed legislative solutions can be found here.

Grant, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 representing the state's 47th House District after replacing Deanne Mazzochi according to available information.

The future of these proposed changes remains uncertain as many of them await further action by legislative committees or floor votes.
