JOB SUMMARY: 

The Village of Oak Brook Fire Department is seeking candidates for a Part-Time Fire Inspector to work in the Fire Prevention Bureau.  This position would provide routine scheduled fire prevention inspectional services ensuring that buildings and properties within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Village are safe by detecting fire hazards and enforcing national, state, and local fire codes and ordinances for existing, new and renovated occupancies. This role requires a high level of attention to detail as well as extensive knowledge of fire inspection services, fire alarms, fire suppression/installed extinguishing systems, potential fire hazards, and safety codes. Inspections and their findings may require the issuance of warnings and/or violation notices addressing non-compliance.  May also respond to non-scheduled inspections or complaints regarding fire prevention codes and enforcement.  The position will work 2-3 days per week with varying hours, not to exceed a maximum of 19 hours per week. This is a non-IMRF position with no benefits. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDING, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • The enforcement of the Village of Oak Brook codes and ordinances relating to fire prevention and safety standards of residential and commercial building construction, alteration or remodeling.
  • Fire prevention inspectional work, as well as component system inspections including, but not limited to, those related to electrical, fire alarms, fire suppression/installed extinguishing systems, sprinkler installations and systems.
  • Work is performed under general supervision of the Battalion Chief assigned to the Fire Prevention Bureau and is normally reviewed through electronic and written reports prepared, and on the basis of results obtained.
  • Conducts inspections of construction projects to insure compliance with fire and life safety codes and ordinances.
  • Conducts on-site inspections and re-inspection of all existing commercial occupancies,   including but not limited to, places of public assembly, retail, business, industrial establishments, and material storage areas for the purpose of discovering and eliminating existing or potential fire and/or life safety hazards or dangerous conditions that may exist for insuring compliance with Municipal and State codes and ordinances relative to fire hazards and installed fire protection systems and equipment.
  • Conducts routine periodic Fire Prevention and Life Safety inspections in all existing commercial structures, residential structures by request, new commercial and residential structures, or commercial and residential structures under construction.
  • Conducts residential property checks as requested with respect to Fire and Life safety.
  • Investigates complaints related to violations of the Fire Prevention ordinances and codes.
  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive system of recording and reporting of all activities under jurisdiction.
  • Complies with all personnel safety rules and regulations, both written and verbal, as instructed by the supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

High School Diploma or equivalent.  Three years of municipal government experience as a Fire Inspector is desirable.  Must possess Fire Inspector 1 through the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal.   Valid driver’s license also required. Considerable knowledge of business English, punctuation, spelling, office practices, procedures and operation of standard office equipment including computer, telephone, fax machine, calculator, is required. Proficiency in Word, Outlook, Excel, and Access is preferred.   Use and understanding of Image Trend software is desirable.  Comprehensive knowledge of current fire codes, rules, regulations and ordinances used by the Village related to fire prevention and enforcement. Ability to read and understand building plans, specifications and blueprints, and relate them to related processes.  Comprehensive knowledge of modern Fire Prevention principle methods and practices, with an ability to recognize and obtain corrective action of the violations of fire prevention codes.   Must be an effective and skillful practitioner of inspectional services. Ability to deal and communicate with the general public and village staff with competence, tact, and discretion is required.  The successful candidate will also have excellent organizational skills and the ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing movements requiring skill and training, such as data entry.  Ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling is also required. 

Selection: 

Candidate screening process may consist of an application review, skills testing, employability assessment, interviews, reference checks, and other verifications. Chosen candidates will be subject to a background and criminal history investigation, qualifying pre-employment medical examination, and drug screen.
