In the wake of U.S. Sen. John McCain’s death Saturday, U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Illinois) praised the Arizona Republican for both his military and senate achievements.

“This past weekend, our nation lost one of its treasures with the passing of Sen. John McCain,” Roskam said in a statement. “A hero and a patriot of the highest order, John dedicated his life to the service of this country both as a member of our armed forces and as a civil servant, and he earned a reputation as a shining example of integrity and bipartisanship among his colleagues.”

McCain passed away after a year-long battle against brain cancer, just one day after his family announced he was ending treatment for the tumor, The New York Times reported.

“I had the great honor to interact with John over the years and was awestruck by the humility and grace that a man of his caliber — having spent six years as a prisoner of war — carried himself with until the very end,” Roskam said. “The nation celebrates his life and mourns his loss together.”
