Illinois Democrat gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker will follow State House Speaker Mike Madigan's huge tax hike with increases of his own if he wins in November, the ranking House Republican said earlier this week.

"Mr. Pritzker has made raising taxes a central theme of his campaign," House Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) said. "After the Mike Madigan 32 percent permanent income tax last year on all Illinoisans, including the middle class and low-income workers. Pritzker now wants to raise the current rate against all Illinoisans until he can change the constitution so he could ram through what he has called the graduated tax system. Why? For more Democrat spending, which is the root evil and the root problem of all issues that we have in Springfield."

The comments came during a press conference with state Republican lawmakers earlier this week.

Durkin, first elected to the House in 2006 and ranking House Republican since 2013, defeated Mickey Straub during the March primary and now faces off against Democrat and Darian Ward 4 Alderman Tom Chlystek in November's general election for the 82nd District.

The 82nd District is located within Cook, DuPage and Will Counties including Darien, Homer Glen, Lemont and Willowbrook.
