Kinzler stresses need to rein in property taxes

Jay Kinzler has staked his campaign in House District 46 on tackling property taxes, which have risen six times faster than household income, according to recent statistics

“From 2008-2015, the average household income grew by 7 percent, but average property taxes paid grew nearly 48 percent, according to data from the U.S. Census,” Kinzler, a Glen Ellyn Republican, posted on his Facebook page.

“We can’t expect residents of District 46 to be paying more and more to government agencies within their jurisdiction than the people themselves are making in income,” he told the DuPage Policy Journal in a phone interview.

“It is not sustainable." he said. "It will reach a breaking point and for many people it has. That is why we see a huge exodus of Illinois residents.”

Kinzler’s social media post also called on voters to make a change in government.

“For most of us our home also represents our nest egg,” he wrote. “Thanks to Illinois career politicians – whose government salaries are rising much faster than those of us in the private sector – our home values are decreasing as our property taxes increase. This is because fewer buyers are willing to buy a home with unaffordable property taxes. Let’s end this insanity and elect new leaders."

He said that people were finding it too expensive to stay in the state.

“People that have been here for generations have, due to high property taxes, actually been moving to other states,” he said. “We need to give those people some property tax relief not just hold the line but reduce the property taxes.”

Kinzler added that he has experience successfully reducing taxes during his time with the Glen Ellyn Park District.

“We have been able to cut taxes 11.4 percent in (the) park district,” he said, adding they would be reducing it 22 percent next year.“Property taxes should be what the residents can afford to pay.”

Kinzler is running in the GOP primary for the seat held by Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park).
