Cullerton slams $400,000 bonus given to outgoing university chancellor

Cullerton

State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Dist. 23) said last week that he is not happy with the $400,000 bonus University of Illinois outgoing Chancellor Phyllis Wise recently received.

“In three years, my wife and I will be sending our oldest son to college," Cullerton said. "His tuition dollars should be used toward paying for his college education, not filling the pockets of overpaid administrators. These types of actions make families reconsider sending their children to Illinois’ public community colleges and universities.”

Numbers reveal Illinois college students are paying more than double the national average to attend a public four-year university.

“The state funds higher education to educate our students, not to pay administrators for quitting their job,” Cullerton said. “We have seen enough. This type of abuse illustrates what is wrong with our higher-education systems. College administrators should be looking for ways to make college affordable for our children, not finding ways to collect a paycheck at the expense of their future.”

Cullerton said he is committed to remedying abuses existing within state community colleges and state universities.

“I’ll continue to fight to end the misuse and abuse of taxpayer dollars,” Cullerton said.
