Illinois lawmakers have approved a bill that will increase utility bills for residents across the state. According to critics, this is not the first time such measures have been passed, with previous attempts also resulting in higher costs rather than savings.
Some opponents of the legislation argue that similar policies implemented in nine other states have led to increased utility expenses for consumers. They claim these outcomes demonstrate the policy’s failure.
One concern raised by critics is that Cook County residents will face both higher property taxes and now additional utility costs. There are allegations that the new law will benefit hedge fund-backed battery companies through 20 years of profits.
The measure has been described by some as "bad public policy" and referred to as "JB Pritzker’s 'Big Billionaire Battery Bailout.'"
Illinois State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro stated, "I VOTED TO PROTECT HARDWORKING FAMILIES LIKE YOURS — I VOTED NO!"
Sanalitro, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state's 48th House District, replacing previous state representative Terra Costa Howard.
