Illinois House Republicans have voiced their opposition to a new energy package they describe as the “Green New Giveaway,” arguing it will lead to higher utility rates for families in the state. The package includes subsidies aimed at promoting green energy initiatives.

In a statement, Republican lawmakers criticized the plan, saying, “Think your power bills are high now? Democrats’ Green New Giveaway energy package will raise rates even higher. Illinois families shouldn’t have to cover the costs for this green energy experiment.”

The proposed legislation would provide millions of dollars in subsidies for green energy projects. Critics claim that these costs will ultimately be passed on to consumers through increased utility bills.

“Illinois’ latest ‘Green New Giveaway’ includes millions of dollars in green subsidies and they want to stick you and your family with the bill. House Republicans will not stand for this additional burden on Illinois families who are already contending with massive energy bills,” according to the statement.

House Republicans also objected to what they view as efforts to impose green energy projects on local communities without adequate input or consideration of local concerns. “Trying to force their green energy projects on local communities isn’t the answer for our state’s energy crisis. House Republicans stand opposed to this problematic energy package,” they said.

Amy Grant, a Republican elected in 2023, represents Illinois' 47th House District after replacing Deanne Mazzochi.
