City of Warrenville Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness Commission met May 20
Here are the minutes provided by the commission:
A. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by Chairperson Legler.
B. OTHER BUSINESS
Statement by Mayor Johnson regarding his support and the importance of this commission. The following members were sworn in by Mayor Johnson:
Sworn in as Chairperson: Megan Legler
Sworn in as Commissioners: Lucy Nelson and Tabitha Deno
Statement by Assistant City Administrator Alma Morgan regarding City support of
IDEC. Larger group discussion on the way forward for IDEC followed:
• Everyone wants to support this commission and see it succeed.
• Need more participation outside of meetings, engage with other members and community.
• How to improve, projects/ideas that support the city’s initiatives, refresh and revisit our goals.
• Reminded that IDEC is/has no political action or advocacy focus, it is about the City of Warrenville and kindness/welcomeness should be at the forefront.
C. ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Chair Megan Legler, Commissioners Tabitha Deno, Robin Pelfrey, Sara Phelan, Lucy Nelson, and Trudi Meeks
ALSO PRESENT: Mayor Andrew Johnson, Assistant City Administrator Alma Morgan; ex-officio members Diana Abraham (WPLD), Joseph Levy (WFPD), Matt Odom (WPD), Council Liaison Bill Weidner and Staff Liaison Juan Ortiz
ABSENT: Ex-officio member Dr. Limaris Pueyo
D.CITIZENS’ COMMENTS
None
E. APPROVAL OF THE April 15, 2025 MINUTES
A motion was made by Commissioner Nelson to approve the minutes. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Meeks. The motion was unanimously approved.
F. STAFF REPORT
Staff Liaison Juan Ortiz shared the following:
1. One (1) more American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter is needed Minutes for the Regular Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness Commission Meeting
2. Commission members are reminded to check their email and to attend meetings
3. IDEC has a table for the upcoming Multicultural Festival
G. BUSINESS OF MEETING
1. Discussion of the Reflection and Engagement survey
• There is a consensus that the committee needs attainable action items
• Common themes of wanting to help more throughout the responses
2. Arbor Day Feedback and Wrap-up Discussion
• The event was well received and went great. Quiet room was utilized by kids and families who needed a quiet area – potential to make event even more kid friendly next year.
3. Planning for Multicultural Fest: Gather Volunteers, decide on what IDEC should do at table
• Table should be more visible, challenging to staff as commission members are tabling for other organizations at the same events
• Multicultural themed booth- “Welcome in Warrenville”, “One Town Many Voices” was suggested.
• Discussed best way to table at the event: Include multiple ways to say welcome, including local languages used in Warrenville, generational terms, cultural facts, word cloud.
ACTION ITEMS: Commissioner Phelan to get a list of Local Languages, Chair Legler to put together facts about cultures in Warrenville, Ex-Officio Odom and Abraham to look into providing a spinning board for IDEC table, Ex-Officio Abraham will reserve room at Library to be designated as quiet space for Multicultural Fest and reach out to Little Friends to support the room.
4. Begin to Prep for National Night Out (NNO)
• The event is scheduled for 8/5
• Discussed concerns with Cerny Park construction
• ACTION ITEM: Add NNO planning to June Agenda
H. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS/REPORTS
1. Chair Legler discussed the Welcome Packets sent out to new residents
• IDEC would like to support the Welcome Packets
• May need to create a sub-committee to discuss what to include in packets and how to best distribute
• ACTION ITEM: Staff Liaison Ortiz will get a sample of the Welcome Packet and new water connection numbers Minutes for the Regular Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness Commission Meeting
I. ADJOURN
A motion was made by Commissioner Phalen to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Commissioner Nelson, passed unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 8:19p p.m.
