State Representative Amy Grant of Wheaton has expressed her opposition to a proposed bill that would legalize assisted suicide in Illinois. Grant, a known pro-life advocate, stated her firm stance against the legislation.
“I rise today with firm, unapologetic opposition to assisted suicide,” said Rep. Grant. “Let’s call this what it is — the state giving a green light to end a life. And that is something I will never support.”
Grant's advocacy extends beyond unborn children to include other vulnerable groups such as the elderly and disabled individuals. She emphasized, “I’m pro-life. That includes the unborn, the elderly, the disabled, and those who are alone or struggling,” adding that life should not be treated as disposable.
She voiced concerns about potential abuse of the policy, particularly affecting people with developmental disabilities and seniors without support systems. “People with developmental disabilities, seniors who feel like a burden, and those without family or support — they will be the ones who get pushed aside.”
Grant shared an anecdote from a visitor at the Capitol: “Her daughter was placed in hospice nine years ago, yet this Spring she attended her very first prom. Would we get stories like this with assisted suicide being legalized?”
“We should be offering hope and help — not a prescription for death,” she asserted. “I’m an advocate for life on the way into this world, while you’re here, and on the way out. The only thing that should be forcibly terminated is this bill.”
Grant urged her colleagues in the House to vote against the bill if it reaches them.
