State Representative Amy Grant of Wheaton has voiced her opposition to House Bill 2827, known as the "Homeschool Act," which advanced out of committee in Springfield, Illinois. The bill introduces new requirements for families who homeschool or send their children to private schools.
"This bill creates unnecessary burdens for families who have already made the best possible educational choice for their children," said Rep. Grant. "Parents deserve the freedom to decide what works for their kids without added bureaucracy."
Under the proposed legislation, nonpublic elementary and secondary schools would need to register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education. Homeschooling families would be required to submit a Homeschool Declaration Form or face fines and other penalties. Additionally, they would need to provide personal information about themselves and their students to state and local authorities.
The proposal has met significant opposition from residents across Illinois, with over 34,000 individuals filing witness slips against it. Many concerned citizens traveled to Springfield to express their concerns directly to lawmakers.
"I’ve heard from so many families in my district and around the state who are frustrated by this bill," Grant continued. "We should be supporting parents in their efforts to educate their children—not creating barriers that make it harder."
Despite unanimous opposition from House Republicans on the Education Policy Committee, HB2827 passed through committee and will now proceed to the full House for consideration. Rep. Grant is urging residents who oppose these requirements to sign her petition and submit a witness slip at ilga.gov.
State Representative Amy Grant is serving her fourth term in the General Assembly representing the 47th district, which includes communities such as Naperville, Warrenville, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Lisle, Carol Stream, Bartlett, West Chicago, Winfield, and Wayne.
