City of Darien Police Committee met Jan. 20

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

1. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. in attendance were Chairman Joseph Kenny, Aldermen Ralph Stompanato and Eric Gustafson, Chief Greg Thomas and Deputy Chief Jason Norton.

2. Public Comment and Communications

There was no public comment or communication.

3. Approval of Meeting Minutes from the November 18, 2024 Meeting.

Alderman Stompanato motioned to approve the minutes seconded by Alderman Gustafson. The minutes were approved.

4. An ordinance amending various sections of Title 9, Chapter 2 “POLICE DEPARTMENT” of the City of Darien City Code.

Deputy Chief Norton advised the committee that Cass District 63 Superintendent Mark Cross requested that the City make a code change to place signage on Willowcreek Lane near Cass Junior High School. This change would prevent westbound traffic off of Bailey Road between the hours of 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. This change is important for student safety during student pick up and drop off times. School staff is currently using traffic cones during these times but some motorists are ignoring the cones. Hopefully placing signage and codifying the change in the City ordinance will increase student safety.

Chairman Kenney asked a question regarding what appears to be a typo in the ordinance which states the ordinance should be inconsistent with the law. Deputy Chief Norton said he will correct that error. A discussion ensued about whether the change will cause traffic issues. Deputy Chief Norton explained the signs will simply reinforce what the school has been doing for the past 20 years using traffic cones.

Alderman Stompanato motioned to approve the amendment seconded by Alderman Gustafson.

Alderman Gustafson motioned to adjourn seconded by Alderman Stompanato. The meeting was adjourned at 6:06 p.m.
