DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Carol Stream Chief of Police Don Cummings have announced that Judge Joshua Dieden has granted the state's motion to deny pre-trial release for Anthony Huggins, a Michigan resident accused of bringing a loaded gun into the Carol Stream Police Department. Huggins is also charged with attempting to steal a catalytic converter from an occupied vehicle.

Huggins, 33, from Inkster, Michigan, appeared in court facing multiple charges including Bring Into Penal Institution - Firearm (Class X Felony), Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by Felon (Class 3 Felony), and Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon – No FOID Card (Class 4 Felony). His co-defendant, Clinton Bigelow, also 33 and from Warren, Michigan, faces charges related to possession of stolen motor vehicle parts but was not detained pre-trial.

The incident occurred on December 9 when police responded to a call at the Carol Stream Animal Hospital about someone crawling under a car. The investigation revealed that Huggins allegedly attempted to steal a catalytic converter using a cordless saw. Officers later stopped the suspects' vehicle and found seven catalytic converters inside. A search at the police department uncovered a loaded Glock 43 reported stolen out of Detroit in Huggins's slipper.

Berlin commented on the case saying, “The allegations that these two men traveled to Illinois and in broad daylight attempted to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle while the owner was inside the vehicle are outrageous.” He praised local officers for their quick response and efforts in handling the situation safely.

Chief Cummings highlighted the ongoing issue with catalytic converter thefts across Chicagoland: “For the past several years, catalytic converters have become prime targets for thieves across the Chicagoland area.” He commended his officers for swiftly arresting those involved and removing an illegal firearm from circulation.

Both defendants are scheduled for arraignment on December 23 before Judge Mia McPherson. The public is reminded that charges are not proof of guilt; both men are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in court.
