DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick announced that Judge Robert Gibson has granted the State’s motion to deny pre-trial release for three men accused of robbing a Downers Grove man at gunpoint on September 28, 2024. The defendants, Javari Williams, 18, Tremaine Nelson, 18, and Tyray Hemphill, 22, appeared in court charged with armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated vehicular hijacking.

On September 27, DuPage County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an armed robbery report at 36th and Fairview Avenue in Downers Grove. The victim reported that a black Dodge Charger was involved. Police located the Charger and the victim’s vehicle nearby. After a pursuit, the Charger crashed at Route 83 in Hinsdale. Four occupants exited the vehicle; three fled over a fence while one claimed to be a robbery victim.

Authorities established a perimeter and arrested the three defendants after a brief search. Nelson was found in a window well along with a loaded Glock handgun. Williams and Hemphill were also found on the property with two additional handguns.

An investigation revealed that the victim had arranged to sell his car via the “Offer up” app. During a test drive with an individual named “Reyes,” the defendants allegedly approached with guns drawn, robbed the victim of his belongings, pushed him to the ground, and fled in his car and the Charger.

Berlin stated: “The allegations that Javari Williams, Tremain Nelson and Tyray Hemphill violently robbed an innocent man of his car... are frightening.” He commended law enforcement for their quick apprehension of the suspects.

Mendrick added: “This type of violent crime will not be tolerated.”

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office at (630) 407-2400.

The next court date for all three defendants is scheduled for October 28, 2024.
