DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres announced that Judge Joshua Dieden granted the State’s Motion to deny pre-trial release for an Aurora man accused of shooting a woman in a car late last month. Jarvell Rainey, 21, of the 800 block of Oliver Avenue, appeared in First Appearance Court charged with one count of Attempt First-Degree Murder (Class X Felony), one count of Aggravated Battery – Discharge of a Firearm (Class X Felony), and one count of Armed Robbery with a Firearm (Class X Felony).
On June 23, 2024, at approximately 2:46 p.m., officers from the Naperville Police Department responded to a call about a gunshot victim in the 1000 block of Iroquois Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found the female victim suffering from a gunshot wound on the right side of her chest. Officers rendered aid and transported her to a local hospital for medical attention.
Following an investigation into the shooting, it is alleged that Rainey and an unidentified individual drove to the Motel 6 located at 1585 Naperville-Wheaton Road and picked up the victim, who got into the back seat of their car. It is further alleged that Rainey punched the victim in her right eye and shot her while robbing her of her wallet, cell phone, backpack, and an unspecified amount of cash. After the shooting, Rainey allegedly forced the victim out of the car and fled.
Officers identified Rainey as a suspect in the case, leading Judge Susan Alvarado to issue an arrest warrant on June 28, 2024. On July 8, authorities located Rainey leaving Comfort Inn and Suites at 308 S. Lincolnway Street in North Aurora. Authorities apprehended him without incident.
“It is alleged that Mr. Rainey not only robbed an innocent, unarmed woman but also shot her in the chest before forcing her out of the vehicle and fleeing,” Berlin said. “This type of senseless violence and complete disregard for human life will not be tolerated in DuPage County. Thankfully, the victim did not sustain life-threatening injuries."
Berlin commended multiple law enforcement agencies for their cooperation: "I thank the Aurora and North Aurora Police Departments, U.S. Secret Service, Chicago Crime Prevention and Information Center, Memphis Police Department for their assistance in this case."
Chief Arres echoed these sentiments: “Acts of violence that put our residents in danger cannot and will not be tolerated in our city... The men and women of the Naperville Police Department did an outstanding job... A special thanks to State’s Attorney Berlin and his staff for their assistance.”
Rainey's next court appearance is scheduled for August 5, 2024.
