State Senator Seth Lewis (R-Bartlett) and State Representative Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) have announced the cancellation of a Fishing Derby scheduled for Saturday, June 29, at Herrick Lake in Wheaton.
“As much as we were looking forward to this event, the DuPage County Forest Preserve District’s ecologist has identified an active algae bloom at Herrick Lake,” said Lewis. “There are health concerns if people come into contact with lake water during an active algae bloom. A youth fishing event would have a high probability of the children coming in contact with water due to the nature of the activity, so out of an abundance of caution and to ensure everyone’s safety, we must cancel the event.”
Harmful algal blooms result from a rapid growth, or bloom, of blue-green algae (also known as cyanobacteria). It is a natural component of the aquatic environment in Illinois, but excessive blooms can occur in warm-weather months during calm and sunny conditions. Blooms may appear as a thick scum layer or green paint on the surface of the water and can be a variety of colors such as blue, green, or brown.
Humans are primarily exposed to blooms by incidentally ingesting contaminated water while swimming, wading, or participating in water sports such as canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, or tubing. Exposure can also occur by inhaling water mist while boating or by fishing or eating fish from a contaminated water body.
“I am disappointed that we have to cancel this exciting event,” said Rep. Grant. “However it is more important that we exercise the necessary precautions and prioritize any possible participants’ health and safety.”
According to Lewis and Grant, an attempt will be made to reschedule the event at a later date. For additional information, please call the Lewis district office at (630) 349-0645.
