DuPage County Environmental Committee met May 7

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

1. CALL TO ORDER 

8:30 A.M. meeting was called to order by Chair Sheila Rutledge at 8:30 A.M. 

2. ROLL CALL 

Other Board Members present: Member Yeena Yoo late arrival at 8:41 A.M and Member Patty Gustin late arrival at 8:42 A.M. due to attending another committee meeting. 

PRESENT Covert, Cronin Cahill, Garcia, LaPlante, and Rutledge 

ABSENT Evans 

LATE Gustin 

Motion to allow a Board Member to join committee for quorum purposes 

Chair Rutledge made a motion at 9:05 A.M. to add Member Patty Gustin to the meeting for quorum purposes when Vice Chair Garcia and Member Cahill left to attend another meeting. All ayes, motion carried.  

3. CHAIRWOMAN'S REMARKS - CHAIR RUTLEDGE 

Chair Rutledge thanked Public Works and the Division of Transportation for the tree planting they did at the Great Western Trail in West Chicago. Chair Rutledge shared information about the Blooming Fest in downtown West Chicago taking place on May 18, 2024. 

4. PUBLIC COMMENT 

Kay McKeen, Founder and Executive Director of SCARCE, thanked numerous people for their participation in the Design Challenge, The Garden Market, and Earth Flag ceremonies. McKeen provided information on upcoming events for the months of May and June. 

5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Environmental Committee Minutes - Regular Meeting - Tuesday, April 2, 2024

6. STAFF REPORTS 

6.A. 24-1426 

2024 International Compost Awareness Week 

Joy Hinz, Environmental and Sustainability Programs Manager, shared information about  the media plan for distributing the educational material on composting during International Compost Awareness Week taking place from May 5, 2024 to May 11, 2024.  

6.B. 24-1427 

Grow Geo Chicagoland 

Joy Hinz, Environmental and Sustainability Programs Manager, shared information about  the educational campaign and contractor introduction program, Grow Geo Chicagoland. Spreading the word about geothermal and pairing a resident with an experienced contractor is the goal of this program. 

7. PRESENTATIONS 

7.A. Priority Climate Action Plan for the Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area 2024 

Edith Makra, Director of Environmental Initiatives for the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, presented updates and information on the planning and implementation of the U.S. EPA Climate  Pollution Reduction Grants. 

8. OLD BUSINESS 

No old business was discussed. 

9. NEW BUSINESS 

Chair Rutledge shared that she received an email from a constituent in regards to proper recycling. Chair Rutledge was accompanied by Edith Makra, Director of Environmental Initiatives for the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, in discussing the U.S. EPA Consumer Recycling  Education and Outreach Grant Program. 

10. ADJOURNMENT 

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
