DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and United States Secret Service Deputy Special Agent in Charge Derek Mayer announced the successful closure of over 350 fake websites designed to deceive visitors through fraudulent investment scams. The joint sting operation, which also involved DuPage County’s IT Department, saved nearly 18,000 individuals from falling victim to financial fraud.

Describing the scam as "Pig Butchering," the operation targeted three individuals from another country who posed as friendly individuals or romantic interests to swindle funds from unsuspecting victims. The fraudsters used fake personas and glamorous lifestyles to gain the trust of their targets before convincing them to invest in phony brokerage accounts, exploiting their emotional and financial vulnerabilities in the process.

In response to the operation's success, Berlin and Mayer collaborated on a public service announcement aimed at raising awareness about such scams. The announcement can be accessed on various platforms including YouTube and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s website.

Berlin emphasized the importance of vigilance in the face of online scams, urging people to refrain from sharing personal or financial information with individuals they have only interacted with online. Mayer commended the partnership between the U.S. Secret Service and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, highlighting the significance of protecting individuals from online traps.

Although no prosecutions or arrests were made due to the perpetrators residing outside the United States, Berlin regarded the operation as a success in dismantling the fraudulent websites and preventing future victims. DuPage County Information Technology Committee Chair Yeena Yoo also expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts that kept residents safe from online threats.
